KAUST Admission Requirements for MS/PhD

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) offers fully funded scholarships for both MS and PhD programs. The admission process is competitive and based on academic excellence, research potential, and alignment with KAUST’s focus areas.

1. Academic Qualification

For MS (Master of Science)

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field
  • GPA: A minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 (or equivalent) is recommended

For PhD

  • A Master’s degree in a related field
  • Exceptional students may apply directly to the MS/PhD track, which combines both degrees

2. English Language Proficiency

You must demonstrate English language ability by one of the following:

  • TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 79
  • IELTS Academic: Minimum score of 6.5
  • Exemption: If your degree was completed in English, you may request a waiver by submitting a university letter confirming this

3. Required Documents

All applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Statement of Purpose (SOP): A clear explanation of your academic background, research interests, and career goals
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation: From professors or supervisors who know your academic or research work
  • University Transcripts: Official academic records in English
  • Valid Passport Copy
  • Standardized Test Scores (GRE is optional but may strengthen your application)

4. Research Proposal (Recommended for PhD)

PhD applicants are encouraged to submit a short research proposal or summary of research interests. It should show:

  • Understanding of a research problem
  • Your intended contribution
  • Alignment with KAUST research centers or faculty labs

5. Interview (If Shortlisted)

Shortlisted applicants are invited for an online interview. You may be asked:

  • To explain your SOP or research interests
  • Questions related to your academic background
  • Why you want to study at KAUST
  • General knowledge from your field

6. Application Timeline (2025)

  • Application Opens: Around August 2024
  • Application Deadline: Likely in December 2024 or January 2025
  • Interviews: January to March 2025
  • Admission Results: March to May 2025
  • Classes Start: August or September 2025
